Construction ceramic market prospers

Analysts say that the construction material market of Vietnam is in its developing stage. With rocketing demands for construction materials, producers have been trying to improve quality, output and design.
After a long period of time in quietness, the construction material market is prospering again thanks to the melting of the ice on the real estate market in the past one year. As a result, the construction ceramic market has recovered and developed strongly.
According to research of the Vietnam Ceramic Association, in the 2000-2005 period, the construction ceramic market grew around 10% annually on average and up to 20% in the past two years.
It is estimated that the demand for construction ceramics of Vietnam this year will be around 180 million sq.m of ceramic and granite facing walls, up by 35 million sq.m compared to 2006.
The output of enameled facing walls increased from 60 million sq.m in 2000 to 170 million sq.m last year and will possibly be 200 million sq.m this year. Similarly, granite facing wall sees an increase from over 28 million sq.m in 2006 to over 30 million sq.m in 2007.
The Vietnam Ceramic Association said that construction ceramic producers would be busier in the coming time because of the increasing need for their products both at home and abroad.
Vietnam has around 500 production lines of facing walls and tiles using Tuynel technology, the most advanced production technology in the ceramic industry at present. This technology helps producers save materials and diminish environmental pollution. More than one-half of facing tile output in the country is manufactured using this technology. Last year Vietnam used 16 billion facing tiles and over 20 million sq.m of roof tiles.
Construction ceramic producers are preparing to expand their production scale to serve the local market and for exports, according to the Vietnam Ceramic Association.
Vietnam’s facing tiles have been exported to 42 countries, mainly Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Australia, Russia and the US. Meanwhile the country’s bathroom ceramic products are present in 32 countries.
This year Vietnam aims to earn more than $100 million from construction ceramic export revenue, including over $70 million from ceramic tiles and $30 million from bathroom ceramic products. The annual average growth rate of export turnover of this sector is around 30% since 2005.
Though exports of construction ceramic products have increased rapidly in recent times, the local market is still the major one.
The biggest advantage of the sector is its initiative in material sources, an abundant workforce and Vietnam’s WTO membership.
Construction ceramic factories are mainly located in provinces which have sources of materials like Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, Thai Binh and Hung Yen in the north and Binh Duong, Dong Nai and perhaps Ba Ria-Vung Tau in the future in the south.
